Mattress Buying Guide
How do you choose the right mattress so you can
sleep better? We all know that mattress selection is
important and that we need to sleep well. Use this guide to
get past the mystery and confusion often experienced by
mattress shoppers. Mattresses look similar in the stores
and in the photos, yet one is $300 and the other $1000.
You’re looking for a comfortable new mattress, but you
don’t want to spend too much or, even worse, too little. We
can’t see inside the mattress, so we have to rely on
information from well trusted name brand manufacturers.
Let us take the mystery out of buying the perfect mattress for you. We have developed a three step process to help you obtain the best mattress at the best price.
Step 1: Select the Mattress Size |
Selecting the Right Size mattress is usually the
easiest decision. If the size you have now is working just
fine, then replace it with that size. If you feel you do not have enough room or are restricted in any way, then it is
important to increase your mattress size. Sometimes
changing your mattress size may involve some type of
sacrifice, such as giving up your current linens or even a
headboard, but it often needs to happen. Rather than
selecting a smaller size mattress for cost savings, select a
lesser priced model in the size you really need.

Step 2: Select the Mattress Comfort Level |
Use a Comfort Scale from 1 to 10 with 1 being the firmest and 10 being the softest. It is important to understand that the level of comfort of a mattress has nothing to do with the actual support your back receives from the innerspring.
Comfort Scale Rating of 1
Mattresses with a rating of 1 would provide proper support for your back and give you the feeling of sleeping on the floor. A rating of 1 does not exist in bedding today.
Comfort Scale Rating of 2 to 4
If you sleep comfortably on your floor, and don't wake up with aches and pains, a mattress with a Comfort Scale rating of 2 to 4 would be ideal for you. These mattresses would feel firm to extremely firm.
Comfort Scale Rating of 4.5 to 6.5
Mattresses in this category are great if you are in-between the other comfort ratings or your partner and you are on opposite sides of the Comfort Scale. Mattresses in this range make a great "compromise" mattress. If you don't have a preference, then a Comfort Scale rating of 4.5 to 6.5 would be good for you.
Comfort Scale Rating of 7 to 9
If you find yourself trying to increase the softness of your current mattress with a down feather mattress topper, memory foam or egg crate foam topper or you like the way a waterbed feels - then a mattress with a Comfort Scale rating of 7 to 9 would be ideal for you. These mattresses are soft and are usually pillow tops, but some luxurious plush beds will fall in this category too.
Comfort Scale Rating of 10
A mattress with a rating of 10 provides proper support for your back, but gives you the impression of sleeping on a cloud while relieving pressure points on the shoulders and hips. Mattresses with a 10 rating are the best in comfort and support for persons suffering from arthritic and fibro-myalgia issues. Use the 10 rating as a reference point for the softest mattress you could possibly have.
